The Actuarial Analyst position provides direct support to the growing actuarial team within the DSAA division across the entire array of healthcare projects involving cost-effectiveness and actuarial analyses.

DESCRIPTION

The Actuarial Analyst position will contribute to active projects focused on evaluating the cost-effectiveness and budget neutrality of programs and interventions as well as other projects involving financial assessments. The position will collaborate with a diverse array of analytic staff to provide healthcare decision and policy makers with actionable results that can be leveraged to transform healthcare delivery and reimbursement. The Actuarial Analyst position will support work that involves (but is not limited to) a wide array of different healthcare projects:

  • waiver evaluations
  • independent assessments
  • budget neutrality
  • cost-effectiveness
  • risk adjustment
  • reimbursement models
  • value-based purchasing
Activities include participating in multiple teams in developing work plans and timelines; performing analytic project tasks; contributing to client teleconferences and meetings; presenting on healthcare topics; and providing regular progress reports to the Senior Consulting Actuary and Executive Technical Director.

Details regarding potential project assignments and key sources of data will be discussed with potential candidates during the interview process.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as an integral part of HSAG Data Science & Advanced Analytics division.
  • Lead small- to medium-sized actuarial tasks or projects, while providing support to other analytic tasks or projects.
  • Understand primary types of healthcare data and methods for approaching data assessments.
  • Evaluate a wide array of data types.
  • Conduct and interpret analyses, develop appropriate actuarial models, manipulate complex databases, and track and evaluate patterns of care and outcomes.
  • Perform data validation, develop and implement analytic plans, and cross reference data.
  • Attend, participate, and assist in team training meetings.
  • Present and communicate project results to nonanalytic staff members and customers. 
  • Represent HSAG in a professional manner at all times.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, economics, or another quantitative discipline
  • Passed at least the 2 preliminary actuarial exams in probability (Exam P) and financial mathematics (Exam FM)
  • At least 3 years’ experience working as an actuarial analyst in a healthcare setting (i.e., managed care plan, actuarial firm).
  • Experience performing financial risk adjustment and rate setting analyses.
  • Use and applications of various risk adjustment mechanisms and tools.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience using statistical software. SAS experience preferred.
  • Experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience contributing to report writing and formal written deliverables.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and work with multiple teams.
