General Statement of Job:
The Academies and Career Technical Pathways Specialist provides academic advisement, and student support services to students within the Academies, TexPREP, and Career Technical Pathways at South Texas College.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Registers all Academies students in their perspective classes.
  2. Reads, analyzes, and interprets higher education degree plans.
  3. Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with area school districts, colleges, universities, employers, community leaders, and service providers.
  4. Builds a network with community professionals and universities to invite to present at the Academies workshops.
  5. Develops and implements academic, career technical and programmatic workshop activities.
  6. Meets on a weekly basis with students to conduct scheduled workshops and case management.
  7. Assists Academies students with financial aid programs, college admission requirements, scholarship search opportunities, and various loan programs.
  8. Provides information on college transition, graduation requirements, transfer opportunities, and resources.
  9. Provides outreach to academies and career technical students that will cover information about articulated programs, career exploration and degree planning.
  10. Tracks and monitors students’ progress through case management, including meeting with students regularly, to ensure academic success.
  11. Organizes and attends college visits, campus tours, and field trips with direct responsibility of assigned students; some college visits requiring overnight travel.
  12. Creates and maintains student academic and career technical files.
  13. Develops and implements the academic advising process for Academies and career technical students enrolling at the college; must be visible and available to students throughout the year.
  14. Conducts process of advisement, which includes: selection of courses, degree planning, information on transferring South Texas College credits to colleges and universities, and assistance with academic issues such as study skills, test taking, and academic probation/suspension.
  15. Promotes and recruits students to the Academies, TexPREP and career technical programs by conducting presentations at the high schools and other academic events.
  16. Assists with the selection process to admit students to the Academies programs.
  17. Attends local, state and national conferences and other events, as needed.
  18. Submits monthly reports to supervisor.
  19. Maintains familiarity with the College’s programs, policies, procedures, academic standards, and career technical standards.
  20. Travels throughout the college district, as needed.
  21. Serves as Campus Security Authority.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor’s degree required.
  2. At least two (2) years of experience working with secondary and post-secondary academic institutions, preferred.
  3. Student case work experience, preferred.


Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  1. Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. In addition, subject to a federal background check.
  3. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.
