The School of Molecular and Cellular Biology is seeking a full-time academic advisor to join our undergraduate instructional program team. Principle responsibilities include academic and career advising for undergraduate students in the School of MCB, with responsibilities to include academic and career advising for undergraduates in Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology, along with recruiting of new students and study abroad advising for MCB International Programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic Advising

Educate students regarding requirements of the majors, minor and certificates in the School of MCB through individual conferences and group meetings. Assist and consult with students about course expectations and academic performance.

Career Advising

Provide career development coaching and guidance to undergraduates in our majors. Support students as they investigate and determine their vocational goals. Assist and consult with students for developing skills needed to be the best possible candidate for employment, graduate school and professional school.

Student Engagement

Assist with recruiting, orienting and welcoming new students to the School of MCB. Plan and host special programs and workshops to aid in the education and success of continuing students. Assist with convocation for School of MCB graduates.

Study Abroad Advising

Work with the Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction to support the SMCB International Programs mission of providing high-quality, discipline-specific study abroad experiences for MCB and Biochemistry undergraduate majors. Responsibilities include meetings with interested students, review of applications to all MCB programs, and coordination of the pre-departure documentation and transfer of coursework back to Illinois. It also includes the management all communication materials for all MCB international programs, such as brochures and websites.

Administrative

Maintain accurate and timely records of all interactions with students. Attend School and College meetings as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field or Bachelor's degree in education with an introductory knowledge of biology, chemistry or biochemistry. Training or demonstrated experience in advising and/or teaching in a college or university setting.

Preferred: Master's degree in biological science, chemical science, higher education, global or international studies or related fields. At least one year of professional experience in advising, student services, counseling or teaching in a college or university setting. Experience with common social media platforms and/or creation and editing of web sites. Experience working with undergraduates at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or other large public university.

Successful candidates will have the following: Exceptional communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues both within and across units. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks and priorities. Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with culturally diverse groups. Highly proficient with commonly employed software, databases and web applications, including social media platforms. Preferred: Knowledge or previous experience with BANNER.

This position is a 100% full time, twelve month, benefits-eligible Academic Professional position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Starting date is as soon as possible.
